Instructions for how to register your cemetery…
To register your cemetery with the State Registrar you will need three things to register a cemetery in existence prior to 1929.
- Evidence that the cemetery was in existence prior to 1929. Typically, this is a photo of a headstone or two that have death dates that are legible and prior to 1929. Church records, old land surveys, and old city or county records can also be used but headstone photos are generally a lot quicker and easier.
- A legal description of the cemetery property. Note, that if the cemetery is 1 acre out of a 40-acre tract, we need the legal description of the 1-acre cemetery property, not the whole 40 acres. This can be done by a land surveyor or potentially from a map. The cemetery location and boundaries need to be clearly shown.
- A completed “Cemetery Registration” form signed by the Mayor if in city limits or the County Judge if outside city limits. The City or County need to keep a copy of the documents for their records, the owner needs to keep a copy, and a copy needs to be sent to:
Arkansas Department of Health
Engineering Section, Slot 37
